Google Ads to Phase Out Ad Customizers

As stated by Google in its support documentation, Ad Customizers will be phased out as of May 31, 2024.

"Existing ad customizers for text ads, expanded text ads and Dynamic Search Ads will stop serving (after this date they will only be able to serve with their default value).”

In any case, what will stop serving is the customizer itself and not the ad type. Meaning that if you still have an Expanded Text Ad with an ad customizer, the ad will keep serving but the customizer will only be able to serve with its default value.

Google is again encouraging advertisers to transition to Resposive Search Ads after back in 2022 it stopped allowing advertisers to create or edit Expanded Text Ads.

What are Ad Customizers?

Ad Customizers is a feature in Google Ads that allows advertisers to show their customers ads that are adapted to what they are searching for in real time. This works by adding a parameter in the ad that will complete the ad with certain content when it's relevant; otherwise it will complete the ad with some default text.

Do Ad Customizers work the same for Responsive Search Ads than for Text Ads?

No, for Responsive Search Ads the setup of ad customizers is different from text ads. Moreover, as from May 31st 2024, ad customizers for text ads, expanded text ads and dynamic search ads will stop serving.
